In September 2005 the City of Fortuna began a 21-month
process to update the City's General Plan, last updated in 1993. The General Plan is the
overarching policy document that guides land use, transportation,
infrastructure, community design, and other decisions. The General Plan is
intended to provide for orderly growth and convey the community's values
and expectations for the future.

Draft EIR
The Draft PEIR is now available. The comment period will run from May 19 through July 3, 2008. The City will be holding a Public Hearing on the draft document on Monday June 30, 2008.
Environmental Impact Report: Notice of Preparation
The City of Fortuna will be preparing a Program Environmental Impact Report (PEIR) pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Public agencies and the public are invited to comment on the proposed scope and content of the environmental information to be included in the PEIR. Due to time limits mandated by State law, your comments must be sent at the earliest possible date but not later than 30 days after receipt of this notice. All comments should be submitted in written form and be directed to the City of Fortuna no later than 5:00 p.m. on July 25, 2007. A public scoping meeting will be held to obtain information about the scope and content of the EIR. The public scoping meeting will be held on July 9, 2007 in the Steelhead Room of the River Lodge in the City of Fortuna from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Community Survey Results
This report outlines the finding of the community survey conducted as part of the General Plan
update process with tracked results of Spanish speaking residents and Senior Citizens. The
survey was a collaborative effort between the General Plan consultants and the City of Fortuna.
The goal of this report is to provide information pertaining to Spanish speaking residents and
Senior Citizen attitudes and ideas on many different aspects of Fortuna for incorporation and
directive in the General Plan Update process. A total of 242 valid surveys were collected, 108
surveys were completed by Senior Citizens, 50 surveys were completed by Spanish speaking
residents and 84 were completed by the community at large.
High School Student Survey Results
This report outlines the finding of the High School survey conducted as part of the Fortuna
General Plan update process. The decision was made to seek input from Fortuna Union High
School students as they have the potential to be greatly impacted by the development of the City
of Fortuna over the next two decades.
The survey was a collaborative effort between a Humboldt State University Sociology Graduate
Student and the City of Fortuna. The goal of this report is to provide information pertaining to
junior and senior level Fortuna Union High School student attitudes and ideas on many different
aspects of Fortuna for incorporation and directive in the General Plan Update process.
Special Meeting for Public Comment on the General Plan Update Process:
The public will be afforded an opportunity to address the City Council and Planning Commission on the General Plan Update process to date. This special session will be held at 6:00 p.m. on March 6th at the River Lodge Conference Center. Community members are invited to discuss their impressions of the process that has included five community workshops, two community surveys, preparation of several reports, and four study sessions by the City Council and Planning Commission.
Selection of the Preferred Alternative:
The Fortuna City Council and Planning Commission met in a joint session on February 12 , 2007. At this workshop Larry Mintier of Mintier & Associates presented a review of Three Alternatives for land use that have been under discussion. In addition to the PowerPoint program the Council and Commission members received a recommendation from City Staff concerning the selection of a Preferred Alternative. After several question and answer periods the Council gave direction to the City's General Plan Consultants (Mintier & Associates) on the elements to be included in the Preferred Alternative. These are highlighted in the Preferred Alternatives Concept Features summary sheet.
Residents of Fortuna will be assembling for the fifth and final time on Thursday,
November 30, to discuss the future of their community. This workshop will focus on
reviewing and providing comments on three conceptual land use alternatives. This
workshop will give residents an opportunity to provide feedback on which alternative
is best to guide Fortuna’s growth over the next 25 years.
Residents of Fortuna will be assembling for a fourth time to discuss the future of their community on Thursday, June 29. This workshop will focus on ranking the
vision elements from Workshop #3, reviewing the key issues and opportunities,
and reviewing and evaluating four conceptual land use scenarios developed
following Workshop #3.
